Hispanic Heritage Month is a month where we celebrate the histories, cultures, and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and South America.
“I look forward to teaching my students about Selena Quintanilla, Frida Kahlo, and all these other historical figures who have had such an influence,” said Carson High School Spanish teacher Ms. Benitez.
In 1968, Hispanic Heritage Month was observed as "Hispanic Heritage Week”, but later on, it was extended to a month of celebration in the year 1988.
Some students, however, believe that the school doesn't do enough to acknowledge Hispanic Heritage Month despite it being a notable time to celebrate.
“I feel like they could do more like representation,” stated CHS senior Naomi Padilla.
There are some activities including one that is being held in the library at CHS. A scavenger hunt is planned for September 15 - October 15 where arts and crafts, friendly games, competitions, and book readings will be available.
Hispanic Heritage Month is also a time when Latin American Countries gained independence and many recognize its importance.
“[I enjoy] seeing people being proud of their culture and where they are coming from,” said CHS Assistant Principal Mr. Riddle.
