Do you know the true meaning behind St Patrick's Day? Many people, when it comes down to it, can’t truly determine the meaning of the holiday. The most that many can truly identify with would be to say that March 17th is about wearing green, finding shamrocks, and finding a pot of coins at the end of a rainbow.
Carson High School senior Xochiti Padilla said, “I thought St Patricks Day had to do with leprechauns.”
In fact, out of 255 students, only 10 knew the true meaning of why we even celebrate St Patrick's Day.
CHS senior David Perez claimed, “There's a saint and people drink to celebrate because of him. He taught Christianity to the Irish or something like that.”
In school, many American students are simply taught to wear green in acknowledgement of the holiday.
Carson High School administrator Ms. Robles said, “Sometimes [I] celebrate St. Patrick's Day by wearing green.”
So, let’s get down to business: what exactly is St. Patrick’s Day.
According to The History and Significance of St. Patrick's Day", "St. Patrick's Day is a celebration of the heritage and culture of the Irish, honoring the legacy of St. Patrick, who brought Christianity to Ireland and is remembered for his teachings and dedication.”
Given the history of St. Patrick's Day and the fact that many students are unfamiliar with this holiday, should be a part of school education? Do we owe it to honor the holiday respectfully?
At the very least, we should at least remember the true meaning behind St. Patrick's Day the next time March comes around.
