Reserved every October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a global movement aimed at increasing awareness surrounding breast cancer. Goals include reminders surrounding early detection and support for those affected by the disease.
This month is essential because breast cancer remains one of the most common cancers worldwide. Breast Cancer Awareness Month plays a crucial role in educating the public about the importance of regular screenings.
Early diagnosis significantly increases the chances of successful treatment, as breast cancer, in its initial stages, is often more manageable.
Campaigns during this month promote mammograms and regular check-ups, empowering individuals to take charge of their health. Additionally, awareness efforts help reduce the stigma associated with breast cancer, encouraging open conversations about the disease.
Through public education, fundraising efforts, and community support, this month not only encourages individuals to take cautious steps in their health but also promotes a sense of unity among survivors, patients, and their families.
Carson High School senior Stephanie Rodriguez understands the importance of early detection.
“It is important to know what is going on with your body,” said Rodriguez, “[and] even if you feel uneasy about something you should get checked out because it could…prevent sick[ness] and [help some] deal with the physical and mental struggles of it all.”
By providing resources and support, Breast Cancer Awareness Month not only saves lives but also ensures that those battling the disease are not alone in their journey.
CHS sophomore Angela Perez said, “People can show support by simply acknowledging this month all throughout the year and not letting any of the people affected by this disease or their strength go unnoticed.”
Giving the survivors of breast cancer all the flowers they deserve throughout this month and year or at least wearing pink throughout the month of October can be encouraging which is the least that we can do for them.
Along with support and being attentive comes hope. Hope that those affected by the disease will overcome this obstacle and go back to their day to day lifestyle in no time.
CHS senior Shirley Rodriguez said, “Advanced treatment can give hope by not allowing the patients to deal with a more unfavorable process of dealing with this disease.”
This month can provide a little optimism without completely raising expectations. This time period can provide comfort instead of fear.
Breast Cancer Awareness month is where we learn and appreciate all the hardships and distress that this disease can cause. This is our opportunity and chance to come together throughout our communities and show support to those most impacted.
