This must first be prefaced by saying that this must not be taken as harsh criticism or as pillorying the school but as suggestions and advice for newcomers.
School can be either an isolating environment or one where you feel at home; both of these affect your general view of how you should approach the school and the students it holds within.
School has all sorts of facets of interest for everyone to enjoy and even those who may be hesitant to get involved can still have a chance; it’s intrinsically human nature to want to be involved in clubs. These clubs can lead to team building, friendships and leadership roles.
Club rush plays an integral part of the high school experience, it gives people all sorts of opportunities to socialize, refine their craft, and touch up their knowledge on whatever they wish to know or learn about.
However, unfortunately, this year’s club rush was unpleasant according to most. The lines were as jumbled as traffic jams, the weather was sweltering, and there was hardly enough legroom; this wacky equation brewed confusion for some students who spent their time absent-mindedly roaming about the quad where the event was being held.
Ultimately, it was a fiasco, but it was as still successful to some. The tables were organized and there was no end to the fun that was had on that day; people enjoyed their time.
One of the most obvious complaints that fell upon the range of eager ears was that it was too short of a time period for students to get the full benefit of the club rush. The bell cut things short.
Many Colts had questions about the club rush. Should this event have been delayed until more suitable weather? Would a higher budget have made this more bearable?
There are some tips that might have made the event better.
“If possible, there should have been water, it was burning hot, [and] I nearly died of heat,” said Carson High School senior Keith Moore.
Some CHS students felt that the weather was too intense and therefore joined only one club before retreating back to the shade. There might have been a vein of exaggeration, but it would not have been shocking if the heat caused some fainting.
One can assume that there could’ve been an increase in club signups if the heat wasn’t as bothersome as it ended up being.
Another point of contention was the apparent lack of organization.
“They could’ve done better. Overall, [it] seemed rushed. I think maybe they should organize the way you go to clubs. The lines always have people cutting you and you wouldn’t even know it with how messy they are,” said CHS senior Sergio Hernandez.
Again, a reasonable solution to the disorganization issue could be an extended lunch.
“Dedicate a longer lunch period for club rush,” said CHS senior Lynn Betancourt.
More time would allow for student understanding of the significance of each club as they pertain to either the school or themselves.
Moreover, this event should have allowed for the club rush to expand a bit more outside the quad for comfortability.
Despite the problems, students should have definitely taken advantage of the annual club rush.
“Definitely easy to approach them, they give their best making school better and entertaining. My advice is just like try to find the best opportunity in those clubs…” said CHS senior Amber Landry.
The reality is that you can always go through your high school education without joining anything at all, everything is optional at the end of the day; a rational argument in regard to the importance of joining a club to feel like a part of something may be relevant or not.
Although these extracurriculars will be incorporated into your portfolio as an addition to your involvement and service to the school, it is also something that is not necessary in pursuing if you are a workaholic and your schedule isn’t tailored for it.
The key benefit to joining is socialization, which can be achieved in any other environment so don’t fret about your decision to join or not.
Club rush is only as important as you make it.
