Labor day is a U.S holiday that comes on the first Monday of September. Celebrating the social and economic achievements of American workers.

It emerged during a period of harsh working conditions, including a 12-hour workday and child labor.

The first ever labor day was celebrated in New York City on September 5, 1882, with a parade.

LAUSD gave their students a 4-day weekend for labor day.

Today, Labor day serves as a moment to reflect on achievements of the labor movement including workers rights, safety and fair wages.

Carson High School senior David Mendoza said, "I just stayed home and spent time with my family, they all had a day off work."

Asking him if he usually does anything during labor day he said, "No, not really, I usually stay home."

Carson High School sophomore Roshell Hernandez said "I don't really celebrate it, but I'm happy we get a 4-day weekend off of school."

Labor day weekend is now a significant period for retail and tourism.

Sales and promotions draw shoppers, while families take advantage of a long weekend to travel and explore.

Most families and friends going to the mall, park or even theaters with new movies being released.

As we enjoy our BBQ's and final beach trips, let's take a moment to remember the holiday's roots in honoring the contributions of laborers to our nations prosperity.
