Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a day that is celebrated all across the United States. The holiday is celebrated on the third Monday of January each year to honor Dr. King's work for being a civil rights leader and advocate for racial equality. In addition, we celebrate Dr. King in order to reflect on his main commitment to nonviolent social change as well as to encourage Americans to help improve their communities.

As many already know, Martin Luther King Jr. was a Baptist minister and leader in the American Civil Rights Movement. He grew up facing racism throughout his life, and he wanted to make a change for not just him but for Blacks in general. And, in the process, he was assassinated but his legacy of change lives on.

"Because like [MLK Day] kind of gives us a reminder of what he did for the black community," said CHS Sophomore Jayden Botton

CHS recognizes MLK Day by acknowledging the leader's contributions during the month of February which is Black History Month. The city of Los Angeles will also host its annual Kingdom Day Parade, the largest of its kind in the country, on February 17, 2025.

CHS junior Miguel Delgado sated, "MLK Day always reminds me of that one guy who fought for the rights and equality of Blacks."

"Martin Luther King Jr. helped improve the lives of Blacks, and without him, racism would of been even bigger and there would of been no equality," said CHS junior Nancy Franco.
