Headphones help teens focus on assignments, along with giving them an outlet to relax and feel calm in a chaotic classroom.
Gabriel Gibson, Carson High School senior, disagrees with the headphone policy.
Gabriel stated, “Headphones give students a way to block things they don’t want to hear, and people just want to listen to their music.”
Gabriel uses his headphones in class around campus as a way to tune out things that are unwanted.
They make lesson plans easier, they create quieter classrooms for better learning, and they
help students focus.
According to research, since 2019, the usage of headphones was 89% and usage has only
gone up since then.
Headphone use, during appropriate times, seems to be ideal.
“I think the headphone policy can be adjusted, (. . .) so we can listen to our music after
instruction,” added Gabriel.
He also noted that the only time he doesn't use his headphones is when he is doing service,
as a teacher's assistant, to maintain respect with authority.
Although there are instances when headphones can be a distraction, that isn't always the
case.
Gabriel said, “I saw a teacher snatch away my friend’s headphones; they got confiscated.''
As much as phones and headphones are seen as a distraction, they can be helpful to
students who want to finish their work faster.
There are other students who tend to use headphones out of comfort.
Mikhail Drake, CHS senior, commented on the uselessness of the no headphones policy.
“I think we should be allowed to use headphones, no matter the circumstances. I think it
benefits us when doing work and keeps us on task,” Mikhail added, “the policy could be
better, so students don't feel like something that they need is being taken away.”
A mutual agreement among students and staff should be reached because it’s known that
students dislike their things being confiscated from them. As young adults, the majority of
us can handle ourselves and our actions.
All people, students and adults, use headphones as an escape and should be allowed to use
them whenever they please. Students believe that being able to use headphones is
important. It impacts moods, and when taken away, this sense of comfort is taken away.
This loss of privledge is what leads to a negative attitude amongst students.
