Student’s Perspectives

Everyone is in agreement that Carson High School doesn't have the best parking for teachers, faculty, and students.

Coming from a person who does drive to school and has to park on the street, it is in fact not great. Sometimes people take the parking spot, sometimes there is traffic, there are some really close calls, and tardiness stays on your record.

“Yes, I do drive. Sometimes it can be a lot of traffic and not enough space to park,” Daniel Academies of Education senior Daniel Looney said, “and yeah, it is difficult sometimes, and I have to fit in the spaces.”

CHS senior Giovanni Gladden said, “There isn’t enough space to get out of the car because of all the parked cars, and yeah, it is a safety hazard.”

The obvious answer to this question is to give students their own parking lot, but due to limitations, it may take a while to find feasible solutions.

“I think we should have a requirement in order to keep[a parking space],” said AEE senior Daniel Looney. “Like a C or better, like how it is for senior requirements.”

Teacher’s Perspective

Do the teachers also have issues with parking? According to many, the answer is a resounding yes.

“I do not believe there is [a problem]. Most of the parking spaces are on 223rd street, and I know that a few years ago, there were plenty of spaces,” said Mr. Stoell of the Academy of Medical Arts, “but the last couple of years, some of the faculty parking spaces have been taken away due to the buses that park there now.”

Even for teachers who have not experienced parking issues, it is a well-known problem across campus.

Ms. Won, of Carson High School, claimed, “I heard there aren’t any from other teachers. Personally, for me, I never experienced any issues parking here on campus.”

And, how do teachers feel about adding a parking structure that only students can use when they themselves are having parking issues? The responses have been mixed.

“No, I'm against students parking on campus because what happens a lot of times is students bring items,” Mr. Shaw of CHS said, “and that creates a safety hazard for the whole school.”

Ms. Rendon of AEE said, “When I was here there was a student parking lot. I believe that we should have one again as well.”

The traffic on 223rd St. has been proven to be a problem for faculty and staff as well.

“It is more of the combined factor of people trying to get into the lot and people dropping their kids off,” Sr. Duer of CHS claimed, “and pedestrians walking across the gate without noticing cars trying to get into the lot.”

Like the student parking situation, the solutions to the teachers’ issues with parking are also limited.

“Although it would be nice if they had more of a flow into the parking lot,” Sr. Duer then continues, “so we can in one way and exit through another than just entering and exiting through one gate.”

CHS senior Giovanni Gladden said, “There isn’t enough space to get out of the car because of all the parked cars, and yeah, it is a safety hazard.”

Students were later asked in their interviews what their opinion on student parks was and if they were against it or for it.

''So it can be easier for students because sometimes I do come to school tardy, even though I come to school early,” Cindy Montenegro, Senior of AMA revealed, “[as] I said on Tuesdays and Thursdays, that is when I have to park all the way on the Elementary side.”

Elijah Aris, a Senior at CHS said, ”We need student parking because it’ll make students less stressed, and you know we have a health class and it talks about stress, and road rage is built-up stress.”

When asked what their opinion was on student parking affecting teacher parking, they answered with this:

“I think we would have the same issue with that, because of the fact there are so many people here… but I do think if we… to have parking spaces” Arianna Monjaras, Senior of CHS claimed, “it would bring a lot of parents to have more trust in their students to bring their vehicle to school.”

“No, I think there would be fewer issues because if we had student parking we would have our own parking spaces,” D’Angela Washington, Senior of CHS claimed, “and faculty would have less time to track everybody, and have fewer car crashes.”

Student Poll Results:

Takeaways

This parking issue has all students and faculty in agreement- parking is a big problem at this school.

Students need student parking so as to not park illegally on the streets and to avoid parking far away from the school which then affects their attendance.

For the teachers and faculty, they need enough parking spaces so that all have a place to park. After all, there are 162 available parking spots for faculty with a total of 173 staff members; clearly, this is concerning.

For now, the only way to resolve the issue is to come to school early, so you can get a spot for yourself and to let those in charge know that this is a serious issue that needs immediate action.
