At Carson High School, the seniors have senior dues that need to be paid in order to fund events for their last year of high school. The money is used to sponsor senior activities and for their festivities during graduation. The deadline to pay dues is December 12, 2024.
The total price tag is $90 which includes a senior class t-shirt for $25, a class picnic for $15, and a graduation drone show for $50. There's also an add on which is the senior luau for $15 and senior class hoodie for $35. In total, with all of the bells and whistles, it would be $140.
Some students and staff think it's a reasonable and understandable price being not exactly cheap or expensive.
CHS senior Jade Finney said, ¨For the different package deals, I do agree with some prices because you can customize the package to your liking.¨
Yet, some students want more specifics before they decide what they want to pay for. For example, some don't know what the luau is.
Carson High School senior Favour James stated, ¨The school needs to be more specific [regarding] the luau because it's confusing. Is it just food or just a dance event?¨
Although the exact details regarding the luau are yet to be decided, some parts have already been solidified.
“We are calling it the last senior hangout basically and are only charging for food,” said Senior Advisor Ms. Robles.
There are other students who have different opinions regarding the dues; they don't think the senior dues should be mandatory at all. After all, paying dues requires a considerable sum of money all at once, and some students don’t have immediate resources available to pay the fees.
“I don't think it should be mandatory because some people do not have the funds to be able to buy their stuff,” said Finney. “For it to be mandatory [is] unfair [especially] for those who don't have the financial stability for it.¨
On the other hand, how would certain activities be funded if it weren’t for senior dues?
¨It should be mandatory because in order to make things happen for seniors, we need funding for it,¨ said Ms. Robles.
Considering all things, the price is reasonable when breaking it down. For comparison, Banning and Gardena high schools cheapest senior dues package is still higher than Carson High School’s with $100 for BHS and $275 for GHS.
