Canelo is the former super middleweight undisputed champion of the world. He has won titles in four different divisions, including super middleweight, junior middleweight, middleweight and light heavyweight. Currently, Canelo holds the WBC, WBA and WBO super middleweight titles.

Going into his latest fight against Edgar Berlanga, there were a lot of people saying that Canelo was fighting a nobody and that he is actively ducking David Benavidez.

To the surprise of many, on September 14, 2024, Berlanga lasted the full fight, 12 rounds.

The exact words from boxing fan and security personnel Chris Lebosan at Carson High School expressed the thinking of many in the boxing community.

“Berlanga earned Canelo’s respect,” said Lebosan.“Canelo could've KO’d Berlanga, but he didn't want to because he earned his respect and didn't want to ruin his future and lose fans because he's next up in boxing.”

But, after this fight, a lot of people are questioning Canelo. Some are saying that Canelo is washed up and that he should've knocked his most recent opponent out.

For many, it comes down to the fact that Conelo doesn't want to fight Benavidez because he knows that he's going to lose.

“No, why should he be ducking, he's the best pound for pound in the world,” said Dean Bravo of CHS.

Although Bravo believes that Canelo isn’t ducking anyone and that he can do whatever he wants, others completely disagree.

“There's no reward for Canelo if he fights Benavidez,” said Lebosan.

Some believe that if Canelo gets enough money, then he will fight the match that everyone wants to see against Benavidez.

Even if the match between the two super star boxers is wanted by most, some have doubts.

“In Benavidez's last fight, he couldn't even knock out a 40-year-old out of retirement,” said CHS senior Michael German. “Canelo handled Bivol, and he is a great fighter. He will beat Benavidez.”

The main question we all want answered-are the fans ever going to get what they want to see?
