Starting the second semester of the 2024-2025 school year, advisory class will include an academic grade rather than a Pass or No Pass mark. What exactly does this mean? Now, advisory will officially count as a grade with additional credits.
“I think that it's kinda pointless because advisory is just a place where you should be making up your work instead of having assignments,” said Carson High School senior Stephanie Landaverde. “It makes me feel like we're having another unnecessary class added to our schedules when it should be used for kids that are behind on their work.”
Some advisories are supplementing their curriculum in order to give a more accurate grade to students. Teachers may require students to read for 15 minutes followed by journaling, complete Social Emotional Learning lessons, or work on improving iReady scores. 0 period is also home to classes such as yearbook, art, and music among others.
"We are practicing and working on our senior defenses and practicing our communication skills," said CHS senior Anaiah Griffin.
Others see the change more positively.
“I kind of prefer [it] this way because it kind of motivates them [students] to actually do the work in advisory.” said CHS instructor Mr. McCracken.
"I think it's good because it helps your GPA.. and it just looks good," said CHS junior Lincoln Paredes.
