Flowers Growing in Antarctica

By Saline Toia, Staff Writer | February 20th, 2024

Flowers are rapidly growing in Antarctica. Scientists indicated that the growth of flowers growing in a climate such as Antarctica can be a sign of global warming or an environmental ecosystem change. Although this issue was relevant from 1960-2009, it has increased more since then.

Carson High School junior Monroe O’Brien stated, “I am fully aware of flowers growing in Antarctica, and this can be a sign of global warming. This issue is important because we should not be seeing an incline in weather drastically, especially from warm isolated areas like Antarctica.”

According to Hurtigruten Expeditions, there are currently only 2 types of plants that are vascular on this continent. Antarctic hair grass and Antarctic pearlwort. These 2 plants have the ability to photosynthesize through their vascular system.

But the question remains: why are flowers growing in Antarctica? One probability is that plants thrive thanks to the ability to absorb water easily, despite extremely harsh conditions.

This continent is 98% covered with glaciers. Just knowing that 2% of Antarctica is covered with land, is the reason that there is kind of a low chance of having any consistent thrive of nature. This place is a polar desert with little precipitation. Additionally, data has proven that Antarctica is a polar desert, but plants can still grow within this environment. Again, the biggest concern that this event has raised is environmental.
