From being a student journalist at Carson High School, to becoming an “Assistant Opinion Editor” for the “University of California, Los Angeles Daily Bruins” paper, Edgerrin Panaligan had just started his second year at UCLA, his first year as an editor for the Daily Bruin. Panaligan spent his first year as an opinion intern and columnist, in which he wrote two news stories and six opinion columns ranging from topics such as financial aid and union strokes to the extensively-covered college admissions scandal that happened earlier this year.

“In my senior year at Carson High, I served as the Op/Ed editor with the Trailblazer, so I thought it just made sense to follow the same path heading into college,” said Panaligan.

His responsibilities now as an Opinion Editor, includes pitching writers on new ideas for columns, critiquing their past work, helping them gather sourcing and reporting for their columns, editing drafts through an extensive editing process, and working with other sections of the newspaper to produce the Opinion page everyday.

“At the Daily Bruin, newspaper production happens five times a week on weekdays, so the transition from working on a monthly paper at the Trailblazer to a daily exhausting, and at times a lot to deal with, but it has been an overall wonderful experience to be a part of,”said Panaligan.

The Daily Bruin in particular started publishing in 1919, under the Cub Californian, where it was published twice a week. The paper began to publish five times a week in 1925, and in 1926 was renamed to the California Daily Bruin. In 1948, it was changed to the UCLA Daily Bruin, which has continued to stick to this day. The Daily Bruin office is located in Kerchkoff Hall, in which some editors live and stay in as a result of their roles in the program.

Panaligan is one of the two assistants, along with the top editor of his opinion section. The opinion section produces content that facilitates discussion on campus regarding issues that need to be addressed.

Edgerrin Panaligan has inspired us individuals to keep working hard towards what we want in life. Panaligan put in the work and time towards what he wanted to do. We are all the next big thing. For those interested in writing, keep doing it, keep working, and inspire and push others. One step at a time.
