Are We Just Making Useless Resolutions

Happy New Year-a time where people come together to celebrate the new beginnings of the new year. Many people write new year's resolutions to celebrate and organize the things they want to accomplish, but are these actually helpful? People have claimed that resolutions are helpful while others say that they simply aren’t.

How can we allow them to be helpful?

Resolutions can be helpful if you are motivated enough to believe that they can help you, and if you are motivated enough to work hard enough to achieve the goals you set for yourself.

A really good way to achieve your goals is to set a time period from when you want to achieve them and when you actually start to achieve them.

Carson High School students agree and disagree regarding whether resolutions work.

96 CHS students have stated that they believe that resolutions do work for them while 25 stated that resolutions do not work for them mostly due to not being motivated enough to follow through with their goals according to a school-wide December poll.

Creating and maintaining resolutions are a very personal journey.

“Well, I think if a person has a sense of self control and discipline they can survive by their codes and their ethics…” said CHS Dean of Students, Mr. Bravo.

Even if you don’t officially write down a resolution, you can still work towards one.

CHS staff Ms. Jennifer does not write down any resolutions but is still motivated to be the best version of herself.

“They’re nice to follow through with and you can achieve them if you really wanted to,” said Ms. Jennifer.

“I think that they can be good if you let them be something that just guides you. I think there are pros and cons. They can be helpful if you let them be helpful,” stated CHS staff member, Ms. Jocelyn.

Although resolutions do not work all of the time, it is a good idea to set an example of how you would like to finish off the year and what you want to do throughout the new year. Have discipline, self control, motivation and believe in yourself to start your 2024 new year strong, and you will be off to an awesome start.
