Some people may think an athlete is just a person who is proficient in physical exercise, but a true athlete is characterized by dedication, focus, intelligence, and a strong work ethic. At Carson High School, Denaylan Fuimaono has showed us his skills throughout the year by competing for the Colts in three different sports include: football, rugby and volleyball. Additionally, he is an academic who takes great pride in earning superior grades.
As many people know, it is Carson’s first year having a rugby team, and it is Denaylan’s first year at CHS. Although he played volleyball for three years and football for nine, he has also developed his skills as a rugby player. His talent has not only amazed his peers but has impressed colleges and coaches alike. His athleticism has earned him more than 10 offers with his final decision being a commitment to San Diego State University.
Proving his dedication has forced him to train a minimum of 3 times a week, and he still managed to maintain above a 3.0. He was also honored in an article featured in the Daily Breeze because of his numerous achievements.
For inspiration, when times get challenging, Denaylan always thinks of Proverbs 3: 5-6.
Additionally, he remains humble and encourages others to spread good sportsmanship.
CHS junior Jakori Moe expressed his support for his teammate and friend.
“Working with Denaylan in football and rugby has been a real learning experience. He is one of the main guys I look up to with the whole recruiting process, and he has also been a great help to my own recruiting process,” said Jakori.
“His work ethic is quite intense; he trains hard and puts in the work on and off the turf. He wants to see everybody around him progress and grow; he’s not just worried about himself.”
The athlete of the year understands the greatness that he has worked so hard to be able to consider.
“Not everyone gets opportunities like these, so playing sports was a blessing. Growing up, I lived a tough life and figured that this was [going to] be my way to make it out the ‘hood’,” Denaylan explained. “Just to those future athletes, no matter your background or wherever you come from, never lose hope, never stop working for what you want.”
As he furthers his athletic and academic career on the collegiate level, CHS would like to congratulate him, wishing him much luck and Colt Love.
