With the finances of post-secondary education weighing heavy on students, especially in today’s day and age, many people as if a 4 year university isn’t possible, or that massive amounts of loans/debts must be obtained. However, there are opportunities presented right before students which many may miss.
As the class of 2019 reaches closer to graduation and their post-secondary education, the financial aspect of it weighs heavily on students. However, this is exactly what scholarships are for as students are able to obtain large sums of money to put towards their education.
For example, Carson High School student Ian Leui was one of 5 students to win the Beat The Odds Scholarship. Ultimately, Leui was rewarded $10,000.
“I had been nominated and had an essay prepared which I sent to the organization. Then after being told I was being considered, they brought me in for an interview and I ended up being one of the 5 winners.” said Leui.
This amount of money is clearly helpful in regards to Leui’s education. His win may inspire students who may struggle with providing the money necessary to attend a 4 year university.
Leui offered advice to students who may be in the financial situation. He said, “Apply to as many colleges as you can. You have nothing to lose and nothing bad will come from applying to them.”
Scholarships are simply free money to put towards the success one dreams of. Although Leui was nominated by ESET counselor Ms. Engel, she says she still wishes she could acknowledge all the amazing students at Carson.
“It is hard that we don’t get to highlight a whole bunch of kids but we are lucky to still bestow this honor on Ian and bring light to all of Carson,” said Ms. Engel.
Everyone is capable of winning scholarships. One simply must take things into their own hands. Ms. Engel also advised, “Always apply. You never know what the person selecting is looking for and you can never have too much money for college. Apply to everything!” With the opportunity of scholarships available to all students, it would be wise to take them and do one’s best to obtain as many scholarships as possible. Goodluck to all students and congratulations to Ian Leui.
