Black History Month is honored throughout the month of February. According to National Geographic Kids, Black History Month was created to focus attention on the contributions of African Americans to the United States. It honors all Black people from all periods of U.S. history, from the enslaved people first brought over from Africa in the early 17th century, to African Americans living in the United States today.
At Carson Complex, Mrs. Harris, Magnet Coordinator, with the assistance of the other Black Student Union advisors Mr. Kirk of Carson High School, Ms. Moore of the Academies of Education and Empowerment, and Ms. Clayton of the Academy of Medical Arts hosted an assembly in celebration of the accomplishments of Black Americans.
“I know it’s the time to celebrate the accomplishments of the Black Americans,” said Mrs. Harris.
The theme of this year’s celebration was showcasing how Black History Month has changed throughout the years.
First, BSU highlighted The Harlem Renaissance Movement, then The Civil Rights Movement, and finally on to The Black Power Movement, and the Golden Era of Rap. Finally, the group explained The Black Consciousness and then The Black Lives Matter Movement.
“I love that we got to share our history with the entire school population,” said CHS freshman, Ashlyn Bradley.
The assembly hosted by BSU started with the Black National Anthem and included music, video, reciting by students, and poetry. Students from all three schools participated and were able to watch the hard work that participants put in to make others aware and knowledgeable.
