Wilmington — The Colts strike back once again for their homecoming game against Gardena after returning from a recent loss against San Pedro High School.
Throughout the first quarter, defense was greatly displayed on both sides of the ball, which resulted in a score of 0-0.
As the game continued, sophomore cornerback, Kameryn Hurst, picked off a pass and returned it as the first touchdown of the game.
Gardena struggled throughout the game on offense making it difficult for them to score.
On Gardena's 3rd down, Carson’s Safety, Nazarus Williams intercepted a pass and returned it for approximately 35 yards.
“We expected Carson to lose this time, but good thing we didn’t,” said Academy of Education and Empowerment seniors Journey Taulua and Isis Tai who both attended the game. “The football team did great!”
The momentum was greatly met, and not too long after, junior Brendan Fautua Leomiti scored, giving Carson a leading score of 14-0.
¨We did great as a team and went out with a bang on our homecoming and senior night,” stated CHS sophomore Nazarus Williams.
Both teams continued to play with tremendous effort on defense and ended the first half with a remaining score of 14-0.
Coming back from the half, Gardena was having a sustainable start. Gardena overcame Carson’s defense and scored with a powerful run on the one-yard line adding 6 points for themselves on the board (14-6).
A few drives later, CHS junior student athlete Miles Merchant displayed his readiness on defense and recovered a fumble putting Carson back on offense. Carson later obtained two more interceptions by Kameryn Hurst and Latrell Cannon.
In an exciting play, CHS junior Simeta Taulua recovered a fumble for a touchdown, but it was unfortunately called back.
Due to Carson’s great defense that was displayed that night, they were able to make another win leading themselves into playoffs. Because of their great will power, Carson was able to make it to quarter finals showing how much improvement the team has made throughout the season.
After the big win against Gardena, the Carson Colts ended their season 2-2 and placed third in the Marine League. Next season, they’ll be back with the same energy making Carson High proud!
