Color Wars 2019

Updated: Oct 16, 2020

By Daniela Coria – Staff Writer

On Friday, March 15, was the annual Carson Complex Color Wars, which is the culminating celebration of Spirit Week; the days of this week were called Meme Monday, Tourist Tuesday, Wacky Hair Wednesday, Throwback Thursday and finally Color Wars on Friday. All three schools – Carson High School, Academy of Medical Arts, and Academy of Empowerment Education – were all in attendance, showing their school pride. The rally itself included many performances, such as the CHS Marching Band, the K-POP club’s first performance, and the Color Guard team.

Although everyone was having fun and enjoying the rally, students started to get out of hand when the first performance was underway. That Friday’s rally had both positive and negative results.

“Color Wars is an event made for students and schools to come together and have a bonding moment, and this is my second-year going.” AMA junior Allysa Redondo began, “Though with the behavior that was exhibited with everyone, I believe that people…view it differently, especially with the staff because of the baby powder and the inappropriate actions that some students did during the rally,” Redondo expressed.

There were times where students acted rudely and disrespectfully. Students were flashing teachers, throwing out change and water bottles with water still in them. This caused the staff members to stop the show until everyone in the bleachers could calm down. It took awhile for everyone to stop throwing baby powder, but with the actions that the students put on, it forced AEE staff to make their students return back to class. Karla Sanchez, a senior from CHS, stated, “Color Wars was [hectic]; the performances were good, but it started to go downhill when the staff had to stop the rally just so they could control the students. It also sucked when the AEE students had to leave because of how they were acting.” Sanchez then continues with, “Overall it was a great way for students to show school spirit, it could’ve been better if they didn’t end so soon, the performances were very talented.

There were even guest performers from outside of CHS, like the Princess of Compton, and a latina group called Bella Dose. They were very interactive with the crowds and they did an excellent job with their routines. Everyone seemed to have enjoyed the special guest and the DJ.

AEE senior Jaylen Husley said “Some teachers wouldn’t allow the kind of actions that students displayed on Friday for future rallies, I think they would be more careful on who to keep a close eye on. Especially with the seniors and the baby powder. It was also fun at the same time, I think more students will want to come out because of the special guests that they hired and the DJ. My favorite part was with the artist from Compton, she was really interactive with the crowds, she actually went up in the bleachers and sang with the students which was pretty cool.”

In the end, there were mixed reviews about this year’s Color Wars and some students believe that leadership should make activities for the students to interact with, and to switch up the performance schedule; students believe that the marching band should go first since they have a playlist to play from. Though students enjoyed the special guest stars and the different setlist they had for this year’s rally, let’s hope next year, students will be more careful with their behavior during these sorts of events.
