The discussion about elevators has been a topic here at Carson High School for a long time now. Currently, CHS has numerous two-story buildings, but no elevator access for the students and staff who need it. Students who are on crutches have to slowly hop their way up the stairs in order to get to their classes. That is extremely difficult, time consuming, and potentially dangerous if they were to fall. Dr. Warren, the principal at Carson High School, confirms that an elevator will be built. Access to the elevator will only be for students who use crutches, medic boots, or wheelchairs. The decision has been made to build the elevator attached to the C building in front of C2. Ms.Castenera, the current teacher in C2, will be moved to a different location temporarily.
“I feel excited about it because it gives our students with disabilities access to the second story classrooms. Once it is completed it will be a great tool for our students,” expressed Ms. Castenera.
Though the question still remains, when will the elevator be built?
“The elevator will be under construction starting June of summer 2020 and should be completed by summer 2021. Some of that area in the C building will be off limits while the area is under construction,” explained Dr. Warren.
In addition, there is an area on the first and second level of the K building that has been roped off for several years. According to Dr. Warren, a bridge will be built there in order for everyone to access the entire second floor once the elevator is built. The time frame for both the elevator and bridge is one year, “but usually construction lasts longer than what they say,” according to Dr. Warren.
The future elevator will be extremely beneficial to everyone at CHS. It will make teaching and learning more efficient and inclusive, with everyone having the ability to reach their classrooms safely and easily.
