According to the Los Angeles Homeless Service Authority, 50,000 to 60,000 people are homeless in the Los Angeles area. The central Los Angeles area is found to be the most concerning area of homelessness in the United States. What can we do to lend a helping hand?

A club at Carson High School called “Share the Love” is helping any way they can. It is a club that is dedicated to helping the homeless in the Los Angeles area.

“We not only help feed the homeless but we collect donations to buy high-need items and donate them to homeless shelters. We participate in a weekly feed the homeless volunteer event in Long Beach every Sunday” said CHS Senior President of the Share the Homeless Club, Frances Suavillo.

People become homeless for a number of reasons. The top reasons for homelessness is unemployment, mental illness, and lack of affordable housing. Large cities like New York are known for having a high number of homeless people but other areas in Los Angeles are becoming more populated with homeless people.

“We will continue to educate young people about the adverse effects of homelessness, focusing on removing the negative connotation associated with homelessness. It can happen to anyone, especially in this economy. By spreading awareness, more students are able to help others and pass on what they learned for those who come after them who share the same passion for helping their community” quoted by Frances Suavillo.

Students of CHS that are part of the Thespians club also show their effort in helping the homeless.

“I feel like the homeless population is too big. The thespians club can make a big difference for the carson community for those who don’t have food to eat for the holidays. Little things can help the homeless like buying food for them or just giving [them] a smile.” said CHS Senior President of the Thespians, Angel Luna

Students at CHS can contribute their effort by joining the share the love club and help homelessness be stopped at a faster rate.
