Freshman XXL Class of 2018

Updated: Oct 17, 2020

Today’s genre of music is not the same, and there are many young aspiring rappers. However, all these rappers want one thing, other than money, and that is to make the XXL freshman class. Rappers that make this list are given the opportunity to not only be on the front cover of the magazine, but to be a part of the Freshmen cypher, which is the freestyle competition. This also grants them the opportunity to become bigger artist than the typical “SoundCloud” rappers that we hear about.

Many people think that XXL is not that big of a deal, and there’s a lot of talk about the artists who have been selected. There is not a final list yet, but the freshmen pitch includes rappers like: Smokepurpp, Lil baby, Tekashi69, Young Nudy, Tee Grizzley, YBN Nahmir, NBA Youngboy, Trippie Redd, Lil Skies, Kodie Shane, Rich The Kid, Jay Critch, Famous Dex, Lud Foe, and many others. However, only 10 artist will make the list.

The nominations all depends on the votes of the public, although this isn’t the final list, much controversy has been created.

“I think that there needs to be more LA rappers, and less rappers like Tekashi69,” stated Carson High senior Vincent Brock.

Some artist have been making music longer, but their fans feel they aren’t recognized enough.

CHS junior Jeramiah Wingo explained, “ Famous Dex should be on there because he has worked hard and still hasn’t gotten recognition; it would be cool if some of our LA artist were on there.”

XXL is the magazine where talented artist who’ve been producing fresh new music are recognized on a larger scale and seen by a broader audience than they’ve reached in their careers.

CHS junior Kanice Redmond said, “XXL needs more singers like Bryson Tiller because it would appeal to all people; having a mixture of artists would attract a bigger audience.”

This is a taste of what your XXL 2018 Freshman class could look like. However, this can all change when you cash your vote on the XXL website.

Last year’s class included Kamaiyah, A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie, PnB Rock, Madeintyo, Playboi Carti, Aminé, Kap G, Kyle, UglyGod, and XXXTentacion, and was seen as the most popular group of artists. Will 2018 live up to its expectations?
