It’s around that time again for the Freshmen Gallery Walk at Carson High School! The event takes place on March 6, 2020, with the Academy of Performing Arts (PAMA) in the OAR, and the Academy of Global Business Law and Government (GBLG), as well as the Academy of Environmental Science, Engineering, and Technology (ESET), in the MPR. For those who do not know what the freshman gallery walk is about, it’s an event for freshmen every year during the Spring semester. The students dress up professionally to present a poster board with different career or job opportunities in their academy themes. On the students board, you will see the career they picked along with the description, education required, salary range, required experience skills, and why it’s interesting to them. In preparation for this event, they have been using the lessons from the Ecco book or Careerzone to find out all the information they may need. The gallery walk also serves as an eye-opener to our young freshmen, giving them a taste of what their futures may look like.
“The students don’t really have the chance to talk about exploring different careers in their academies in their regular classes so by this event that takes place in advisory it helps the students know the education required and salaries and how necessary the jobs are, ”said CHS teacher Ms.Vasquez.
The freshmen projects were all very diverse, with some students choosing to take on more traditional careers and others more unique ones.
“We did the project on Video Game Design because it was a career that applied to our shared interests: socializing, creativity, and media design. I believe we learned a lot from this, we learned about new careers we hadn’t known about, and we also learned how to better present the information on the board better as we went on,” said CHS freshman Emilia Alfaro.
Alfaro also stated “I do think this project is beneficial because it exposes ninth graders to careers they should consider for their future.”
Being open to other ideas and careers revolving around your academy is a great way to get more information, so when you’re out of highschool or on your way out, you know about the different jobs that you can earn money from and be happy with the career you’re doing.
This event has been around for years and will continue to grow and help students open their eyes for life after high school.
