From the Ghettos to the Grammys

Belcalis Almanzar, better known as Cardi B, went from struggling in the Bronx, to walking the red carpet, and she is at the height of her career. After dropping her single ‘Bodak Yellow’, Cardi skyrocketed to the top of the Billboard Charts earning herself the title of being the first female rapper to top the Billboard’s Hot 100 chart since Lauryn Hill in 1998. Shortly after, Cardi B was nominated for two Grammys, Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song.

Recently, on April 6, 2018, Cardi B released her debut album “Invasion of Privacy” a week before she performed at Coachella. With an album that features artist such as YG, Sza, Chance the Rapper, Migos, Kehlani, 21 Savage, Bad Bunny and J Balvin, it was no surprise that Cardi’s album went gold within a few hours.

Carson High School junior Perzia Devoux stated, “I liked her song with Sza, their voices mixed together created an amazing flow.”

Fans all over took to the internet to share their admiration for the album, and a few students at CHS were overjoyed with excitement as well.

CHS senior Sarah Guei stated, “Cardi’s album was brilliant. She obtained a versatile sound by including not only trap music but R&B music as well.”

Many fans and students appreciated Cardi showing a vulnerable side, with her songs “Be Careful” and “Thru Your Phone.”

It’s safe to say that overall, many students were fans of the album and the artists featured. If you haven’t listened to Cardi B’s “Invasion of Privacy,” take a listen to see what the hype is all about.
