Carson’s girls wrestling team captain Nova Gallegos, has yet again succeeded during another exciting season. Gallegos is currently a senior and has been a wrestler for almost 2 years. She recently joined the girls’ wrestling team during her junior year after learning Jiujutsu for 8 years. She is Carson’s first City Champion, a 2-time state qualifier, and Upper Weight MVP. This month she is expected to compete in the playoffs again against multiple schools in California.

“My first year as a wrestler was hard. On my first match I was seriously injured, but I came back for last year’s city’s and ended up placing second and going to states,” said Gallegos. “From then on. I knew that number one spot was my spot. I worked hard to get there last year and did it again this year.”

Coach Soltysik (Solty) of the Carson High wrestling team stated, “Nova’s performance is awesome! She’s our first girl’s city champion in Carson history [and] got MVP because she pinned all of her opponents. All her match times were about a minute total!”

Not even two years of wrestling and Gallegos has already bloomed into an outstanding wrestler. Her dedication to improve gave her an opportunity to lead her peers, encouraging them to do the same as they also strove to become the best versions of themselves.

As a successful leader, Gallegos has given other wrestlers an example to look up to. Many people, especially her teammates and coach, are looking forward to Gallegos and her upcoming matches as she competes for the title of state champion.

Not only has Gallegos been having a memorable season, but the rest of her teammates have been as well. Both the boys and girls' teams utilized this season as an opportunity to learn and grow from mistakes that they’ve made so far.

Coach Solty added, “Throughout the season you could gradually see the team progress. By the time we got to the regional city tournament, everybody stepped up and outperformed what they were expected to do”.

Nova Gallegos is now on her way to represent Carson as she heads towards states. This year, her mind is set on the title of state champion. It won’t be easy for her to claim that title, but with the consistency that she’s been displaying on the mat this season, she is sure to make it to the top.
