2017 is the year Carson High School’s very own all girls rugby team was formed.
You may not have noticed, but CHS has a good amount of rugby players that play for a club called South Bay Youth Rugby Club.
CHS sophomore Manaia Moala played rugby for nine years and enjoyed tryouts.
“The turnout was really good; there were a lot of new girls and girls that have played before that came out,” said Manaia.
Academy of Medical Arts sophomore Amaya Moala is fired up about season.
Amaya said, “I am excited [about the] new season with new players, and the new coaching staff.” Junior Tynesa Taulua from AMA agreed and said, “I think tryouts were successful because many people that have never tried rugby came out. I’m very excited to play this season because I feel it’s training me.”
However, senior Alana Aupiu from the Academies of Education and Empowerment had a different outlook on tryouts.
“I expected more rugby drills instead of just speed and conditioning. I was hoping to see more people come out because it didn’t seem diverse enough,” Alana explained.
The school has never had a rugby team before, so the coaching staff understands that the new girls will not start off perfect and that it’s going to take time for them to get the hang of the sport and workouts.
Practices are held Mondays and Wednesdays, 5:30 to 7:45, and the coaches are satisfied with the hard work put forth so far.
