Hellooooo Carson High School students! We have a unique musical coming this month called “In the Heights,” directed by PAMA teachers, Ms.Kadota and Ms. Barryte, performed by our Carson High School students. “In the Heights,” is a broadway musical created in the early 2000s, with music and lyrics by Lin- Manuel Miranda and a book by Quiara Alegria Hudes. The story takes three days, involving characters in a large Hispanic-American neighborhood of Washington Heights in New York City.

CHS is having presale tickets for $15.00 at the student store and $20.00 at the door. The showtimes will take place at CHS MPR room by 7 pm on Thursday, March 26th, Friday, March 27th, Saturday, March 28th and Sunday, March 29th at 4 pm.

Angel Luna, a 12th grader at CHS stated, “I’m the stage manager and Ms.Barryte is the director. The lesson…is to not give up on things [you] believe in and live on [the] day at a time. The difference between “In the Heights” and other movies is that [the play] shows the real struggles [that] people go through…”

Carson High Drama Tech Teacher, Ms.Kadota stated, “The lessons that I’ve learned from students, [that they are] extremely capable and willing to try different jobs related to building the show and others would rather do nothing and fail. I have many students who have decided to go after careers in the industry. An alumni student, Jacinda Flores is already working at Disney.”

In the Hispanic community of Manhattan’s Washington Heights, bodega owner Usnavi is dating Vanessa, who works in a beauty salon. He dreams of opening a bar in his home country, the Dominican Republic. Nina loves Benny, a shy young man who has worked for Nina’s parents for years, but her father doesn’t approve of their relationship because he wants Nina to finish her education at Stanford University. She doesn’t want her father to bankrupt himself paying for the expensive school, but her father is prepared to sell his car-service business.

“I play the role of Usnavi…the musical [helps me to] use my experience and what I know and apply it within my acting. Being Latino, I love how it tells the story through Latino/Hispanic characters [as] it tells the stories of people coming from other countries and finding their home in America”, explained Brandon Mendez, a 12th-grade student at CHS.

Samantha Salana, a CHS 11th grader stated, “This show is about…[the life] in Washington Heights, [as] we see a heavy Latin community. One lesson I can get from it [is following] your dreams, finding a home and enjoying your life.”

These students have been working hard on this musical performance. Come and support our Carson High drama students. Tell your friends and family about it and have them support our Carson Colts!!
