LAUSD Covid Vaccine Mandate

The covid virus has affected the school learning environment as of March of 2020, forcing children to rely on online learning. This virus has taken so many beloved lives from us, but hope is restored as the covid vaccine is distributed to citizens. Los Angeles Unified School District has given a mandate, “ All students 12 years old and older will be required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 by January 10, 2022, unless they have a medical or other exemption (LAUSD,1)”. This mandate was given on September 9, 2021 with the targeted audience of LAUSD students, ages 12 and older.

Everyday in LAUSD students must present a daily pass in order to get into the school campus. The daily pass is proof of a negative covid test and no symptoms of covid. With the vaccination card being uploaded on Los Angeles Unified´s Daily Pass System , there will be proof of vaccination for students. Students will need to receive their first dose of the vaccine as of no later than November 21, 2021. The second dose of the vaccine must be placed as of no later than January 10,2022. Controversy has circulated over this obligated mandate for the covid vaccine since there are Anti- Vaxers present (those against vaccine). Board Member Jackie Goldberg argues that, “Requiring kids to receive a safe and effective vaccine isn’t new—schools have had mandatory vaccination policy for decades. ( LAUSD, 1)”.

Not only will the vaccine mandate offer safety for students, teachers and staff, but other precautions have already been made. LAUSD states that ,”To date, Los Angeles Unified’s robust safety measures include daily health checks for everyone going onto school campuses, masks, comprehensive COVID-19 testing, contact tracing and isolation of cases, hand sanitizer, increased sanitization/cleaning of schools and upgraded ventilation.( LAUSD,1 )”. The Los Angeles Unified School District not only ensures the safety of students with these precautions, but the vaccine mandate offers resistance to this COVID-19 virus. Keep in mind that students, teachers and staff are allowed to receive a medical excuse if unable to receive this vaccine. LAUSD´s main goal is to ensure the safety of these school environments.
