Making Math Matter

If you didn't already know, last year saw the emergence of a new program added to Carson Complex called M.E.Di.A Magnet. This year, the program welcomed a new teacher that transferred from the PAMA academy to M.E.Di.A, and her name is Ms. Vancheswaran, or Ms. V as her students affectionately call her. She is a math teacher in charge of making the subjects of algebra 1 and geometry more accessible for freshman and sophomore students. She has been a teacher here at Carson High School for 2 years.

A little background-Ms. V. majored in mathematics at UC Riverside, and after she graduated, she went to graduate school to receive a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction from California State University, Dominguez Hills or CSUDH.

“Being the newest teacher for M.E.Di.A Magnet is definitely exciting because that means that we can start our own traditions and activities,” said Ms. Vanceswaran.

She also likes it because she loves working with a small group and thinks that it is easier for students to develop close friendships and trust.

Ms. V puts her free time to good use and enjoys spending time outdoors and getting the chance to see the world.

Ms. Vanceswaran said, “One [of my] favorite hobbies that I like to do outside of school is traveling, and I [also] love to workout, play video games, and read in my free time.”

One fact about Mrs. V that students may find interesting is that she is a huge anime/manga fan and has been since she was a kid. Also, it’s fun to note that if she wasn't a teacher right now, she thinks that she would be a civil engineer or an architect because she loves building things and thinks it would be cool to design buildings in big cities.

She had nothing but good things to say about her time at CHS so far.

“[It has been] unpredictable, supportive and loving,” said Ms. Vanceswaran.

Even though Ms. V. is new to the M.E.Di.A program, a lot of the students that are a part of the program have expressed their enjoyment in working with her.
