Masquerade Ball or Masquerade Dull?

By: Ira Mendoza, Staff Writer | 11/30/22

If you didn’t hear, the homecoming dance was on the 4th of November in the Catalina Room in the city of Redondo Beach. Most of the students that attended said that they had a good time.

Eanne Dimaranan, a senior and student of Carson High who attended homecoming, said that it went pretty well.

“I had a good time with my friends and I liked the music that was playing. Everyone that went had a great time,” said Dimaranan.

The dance was themed “Masquerade Ball”. That sounds fun, right?

Actually, does dressing up in masks that look crazy on your face sound like fun? Well…how about dressing up in black and white clothing, the most boring and mundane colors known to man, does that sound fun? Sure, you can say that the masks make you look mysterious which can be intriguing and that the monochrome colors help set the atmosphere of the dance. But, unless you are from the 19th century, or all you wear to school is black and white, how can any of this sound appealing to anyone?

Why is “Masquerade Ball” even the theme when you consider the other theme options that were given to the students?

Amaury Tinoco, CHS senior and current president of Carson Student ASB, talked about the process of how they selected themes for homecoming. In their class, 4 groups were split up and thought of creative ideas and then decided what is what he said about the formation of the groups and what happened after.

“Many ideas were [given] to the point where there were at least 15 themes to choose from. That was too much to vote [on], so it came down to just four that were interesting to all students,” said Tinoco.

In October, the Carson ASB released a poll on their Instagram with 4 theme options to choose from. The 4 options were masquerade, goth/emo, cottagecore, and Greek mythology. Eventually, it came down to Greek mythology and masquerade. Greek mythology, a way better theme due to it having more creativity in regard to clothing choices and unique designs for decorations, was beaten out by masquerade.

Tinoco said, “I did want Greek mythology compared to masquerade. I did have ideas for my outfit if it [Greek mythology] won. I just think masquerade is just repetitive with the color scheme, and the idea has been there for a long time. I know I’m not the only one feeling this way as people in the ASB class had mixed opinions about it, and I’m sure the entire school has mixed opinions too.”

“Masquerade Ball” is an old-school but overused thematic idea that nobody is interested in anymore. Hopefully, next year Carson they will think of a better theme and vote on something truly unique and memorable.
