Mid-Term Elections

On November 6, the 2018 midterm elections took place. The tension was high between the Republicans and Democrats, and it was a race to see who will be in control of majority of the seats in Congress. The Democrats did gain a majority of the House that day and for the Republicans they won the majority of the Senate. The results can mean many things, such as who in the House has the larger amount of voices that can be heard and who does not.

Academy of Medical Arts senior Javier Lima who worked as a poll worker stated, “The midterms elections are important because we kinda messed up on the Presidential elections, and at least with these propositions we can make it a little bit better.” Lima then added, “The most important proposition is Prop 7 which is getting rid of daylight savings time because that extra hour we get of sleep it comes out to be 6 billion dollars that the government loses, but I think we should keep it.”

“I’m not that involved with politics but this midterm elections helps the citizens prepare for the actual elections. The most important proposition for me was 12 because of animal rights, the children hospitals, and mental health, [which are] ones that I am really supportive of,” Mrs. Bollinger, Carson High School librarian said, “Voting is important because it gives the people a voice to elect leaders that can help lead the country.”

The level of political involvement in our generation, as well as how they’re influenced by the news on T.V and on social media, not to mentions parents and relatives, makes these past midterms ever more significant.

“The elections are important because…how [propositions] would affect the whole economy and how everybody is going to be affected. To determine whether the House is going to be leaning towards the Democratic side or the Republicans, especially since the state we’re in right now with the current president, Donald Trump, is being handled,’’ AMA senior Michael DeJesus who also worked at the polls stated, “ the [propositions] are important, especially Prop 11 because it talked about emergency vehicles being on standby during their lunch break but still getting paid during this time.”

Election Day is very controversial since it deals with politics and many of them have very strong beliefs on each side. This election shifted the tide on both sides, in the following years to come we will witness how these elections will change the course of how the country will be run.
