For many Carson Complex seniors, November was a very difficult month. Applications for CSU and UC colleges were due this month with the deadline being November 30, 2022.

However, these students had access to a wide range of tools that would support them as they filled out their applications. The College Center, and Mrs. Naufahu in particular, was an incredible resource that students relied on.

Because of the tremendous effort that college counselor Mrs. Naufahu puts in every day, it is evident that she takes pride in where she works-after all, she is a Colt herself. She has been assisting students from all three schools on campus and throughout all grade levels for the past five years beginning in 2018.

“I love my job. Being able to work at the high school that I graduated from gives me so much joy,” Naufahu expressed.

Fall semester is especially stressful for Mrs. Naufahu because of the collegiate deadlines that seniors are expected to meet.

“The work never stops! You just learn to breathe during the process and continue with the next series of applications that are due,” said Naufahu. “I always wish there was more time to do this work, but you just learn to be intentional with your time and try to help as many students as possible.¨

Added pressure is created when students procrastinate.

"Stress-not really stress. But, I do always worry for the students who start the applications late, but it happens every year, so I just roll with the punches," said Naufahu.

One point of extreme importance: money, scholarships, and FAFSA. Current and future college students in the United States must fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) which determines their eligibility for funding. FAFSA forms were due for Carson Complex seniors on Friday, December 9, 2022, whether you plan to attend college or not.

Now that the semester is reaching its end, UC, CSU and FAFSA applications have been submitted. Mrs. Naufahu will have an accurate number of application submissions towards the end of January since there are students still applying to private colleges and out-of-state institutions.

Thank you for the tremendous help provided by the College Center: summons that reminded students of deadlines, help from UC readers who met in person and via Zoom with students, weekly announcements and reminders given, support and guidance from the amazing Mrs. Naufahu, help with the Common App, peer counselors that were readily available, and assistance with FAFSA, to name a few of the services that the center provided. Because of the College Center, the majority of college-bound seniors are now relieved and had less stress in getting these applications submitted.

Carson Complex is excited to see where these Colts take themselves in their new chapter of life.
