New bathroom policies are going to be implemented by January 2026 throughout the United States.
In 2016, North Carolina was the first state to pass a bill barring transgender people from using the bathroom correlating to their gender identity.
Recently, Arkansas banned transgender students from kindergarten through 12th grade from using public school bathrooms that match their gender identity. In other parts of the country, a person can be charged with a misdemeanor if they enter and use the opposite sex restroom facilities.
In California, gender neutral bathrooms are being required by all schools before July of 2026.
According to Governor Gavin Newsome of California and as reported by CNN, “Under the law, ‘each school district, county office of education, and charter school’ would be required to have at least one gender-neutral bathroom on campus on or before July 1, 2026.
Creating restrooms that are for all students or to create unisex facilities could be a great solution to this issue.
“I prefer gender neutral bathrooms because I feel like with the pronoun[s] and stuff going on it would fit them,” said Carson High School senior Chris Ferreal.“ Some people might not complain but it might make [it better for] the LGBTQ and other[s]...”
CHS sophomore Taniya Davis said, “I like how the bathrooms are now because I'm used to it. I've been growing up with two separate bathrooms.”
