On Thursday, April 4, 2019 at the Juanita Millender Community Center, the 19th Annual EXP “Oceans of Opportunity” Dinner and Scholarship Celebration was held. Ocean of Opportunity is a organization that fund raises money and donates it to the academy or pathway that gives the best pitch at the event. For the event there were approximately 8 students from each academy at Carson high School (PAMA,GLBG,ESET)  selected to represent the school. Each school was provided a 6ft table and a box your team were able to design how they wanted. There was a pitch contest for the students to promote interaction between themselves and industry partners. The contest were meant for you to pitch to guest and industry your academy/pathway accomplishments, future goals and how your involvement with EXP has helped you.

The rules for the pitch contest were: A) Guests may purchase as many tickets as they wish, and therefore can vote for more than one academy/pathway, or more than once for one particular academy/pathway; B) EXP staff will count the raffle tickets for each academy/pathway and announce 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners at the end of the event; and C) Funds raised from the raffle sales will be distributed as follows: 30% for 1st place, 20% for 2nd place, 10% for 3rd place and 20% was to be divided equally among the remaining academies/pathways.

Accompanying this was a dinner. During this portion of the event, students were seated with industry figures and were expected to interact professionally with them, as well as to be mindful of the program taking place.

Carson Senior High school junior Misha Edwards stated, “My favorite part was being able to see many people with my pathway and experiencing different techniques.”

Rosie Mandela Carson Senior High school junior stated “My favorite part of the event was the dinner portion, because we were able to network with the people who were sitting around us, and the people who were at our tables [worked] in fields that we were probably going to be in in the future or that we were interested in being in college.”

Overall, even though CHS academies didn’t win the pitch contest, there is always next year to work harder and be rewarded for it.
