The scholarship search has been extended to yet another opportunity. 3x NBA All Star point guard Derrick Rose of the Minnesota Timberwolves has started a college scholarship fund for high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors. Rose created the scholarship fund hoping to motivate students.

“Derrick hopes to inspire students to be creative, put in some work, chase dreams, change the world, make it better”, according to rosescholars.com.

The fund will award $200,000 in scholarship money to one high school student and $20,000 each to two runner ups. The $200,000 will be paid out $25k per semester for 4 years, and the $20k each for the two smaller winners will be paid out in the fall of 2018 in a 1 time payment. The money will be tracked with receipts and the students will have to use the money on school only, with a monthly spending limit of up to $3,000. The rules to enter the competition require that you possess motivation, ambition, drive, creativity, organization, and effort. Students need to write an essay with a maximum of 600 words. The competition also requires that each student participating post a public social media page post, a photo and/or video, which includes the hashtag               #RoseScholars2018 and explains why and how they have been a leader in their community.

The scholarship will help some lucky students achieve their dreams of going to college, and hopefully apply their knowledge to make the world a better place.

Carson High School senior Marcus Wilson believes, “It’s an honor to the students to know he’s giving back to his community. It’s very important to let them know to never forget those who inspired to be like him.”

“I think it’s an excellent opportunity and opens doors for students that don’t have the means to afford college”, says CHS junior Savanah Lopez.

Even though it may be only one big winner and two to three smaller winners, the scholarship fund is still a great opportunity for students looking to further their education. It’s great that Rose is helping and giving back to the community by using the platform from his successful NBA career. Keep up the good work students and you might just be the next Rose Scholar!
