Russell Westbrook’s Scoring Tribute

Updated: Oct 16, 2020

Russell Westbrook, one of the most talented point guards in the game of basketball, made history with his 20-21-20 triple-double tribute to the late rapper, Nipsey Hussle. As we know, Ermias “Nipsey Hussle” Asghedom was fatally shot on March 31, 2019 sending Los Angeles and virtually the whole world into mourning. In the week following his death, many friends, family, and fans paid tribute to Hussle through via social media posts, candlelight vigils, and pieces of artwork throughout Los Angeles.

Westbrook’s tribute, on the other hand, was both unexpected and historic. After walking into the arena boldly wearing a blue “Crenshaw” shirt to his home game against the Los Angeles Lakers, Russell became the first NBA player since Wilt Chamberlain to put up a 20-20-20 game. He sprung into action and lead his team to a 113-109 victory. Within the first ten minutes, Russell Westbrook had accumulated seven rebounds and 10 assists.

Westbrook came into the fourth quarter knowing exactly what he wanted to do so when his coach, Billy Donovan, decided to pull all of his starters, including Westbrook. Russell then  waved off his substitute, Hamidou Diallo, and pushed through the final minute and four of the game. The last two seconds of the game, when Russell had finally realized the hard work and history he made, he screamed out, “That’s for Nipsey,” sending the stadium into a roaring standing ovation.

Many people, including Carson Complex students, were astounded and pleased by this performance. Carson High School senior Nigel Tauta explained, “I was speechless. I was just shocked at what he was capable of doing. I think Russell Westbrook is a remarkable human being [for dedicating his triple double to Nipsey Hussle].”

In his post game interview, Westbrook, clearly grieving, told his interviewer with a heavy heart that he dedicates his 20-21-20 performance our “Neighborhood Hero.” He said, “Twenty plus twenty plus twenty… they know what that mean man.. That’s for my bro man.. REST IN PEACE NIPSEY!”
