School shootings are unsettling events that can happen at any moment and at any school. Students must be prepared at any moments notice for such a horrible unexpected event that could take place. A lot of schools in LAUSD practice active shooter situations with different scenarios of a shooter or shooters on campus with multiple casualties down. Most school shootings turn out to be an MCI or Mass Casualty Incident where Fire, Police, & EMS agencies work together as a unified command to handle these type of incidents. A unified command is where multiple agencies work together to control an incident, whether it’d be a wildfire, active shooter, or any other type of disaster that requires multiple resources to respond to the scene.
Student Julius Aguilo, CHS Senior, stated “With the recent threat that occurred a couple of weeks ago, I feel like it’s about time that we start preparing for the worst. School shootings have become a progressively more probable thing to occur in LAUSD and we should prepare for that. Students should know how to work under pressure, know how to protect themselves, and even in general just learn to treat people nicer because most of the time school shootings start due to bullying, so maybe learn how to treat people nicer no matter how weird or unorthodox they are.”
Also spoke with CHS Senior, Raul Brito, who stated “It’s become a trend worldwide because all the shootings have been caused by bullying, so I feel like we should treat each other better. Having students prepared for this type of situation is good because it can help save more lives. If we never teach the students, then more will be lost.”
Should the drills be implemented at Carson High? “I think at least the teachers should be prepared for that kind of situation because without a drill we wouldn’t really know what to do. I would understand if they wouldn’t involve students because the school shooter would most likely be a student, but at least the teachers should be prepared. After we had that scare a couple weeks back, everyone was panicking because no one knew what to really do and I feel like there should be some sort of protocole so that students feel safe at school.” CHS Senior, Jazmin Ruvalcaba stated.
Everyone usually has different opinions, but the students we spoke to had the same ones.
CHS Senior, Unique Sproull stated “I feel like nowadays, a lot of kids don’t know how to handle being bullied and they don’t have people to come to, and I feel like school shootings are more likely so drills should be in fact implemented on our campus. What if a real situation actually happens and kids don’t know what to do and it can just cause more chaos, so it’s better to be more prepared than not.”
It seems like bullying is one of the most common factors that can lead to a school shooting, or a rumor being passed around the school about a particular person. Why can’t we just all respect and be kind to one another? Perhaps it may just be that it just doesn’t exist at this school. We all need to be prepared for the worst outcome and limit situations like school shootings. A question we should be asking, is that are we always going to be safe?
