The glorification of fighting has always been a big issue, and it's not a topic anyone really wants to talk about. Fighting can start because of a myriad of reasons, from the simplicity of someone’s ego getting hurt, to the opposition hurting or talking about someone the other person knows.
“Humans like negative stuff, like we gravitate towards negative stuff,” Carson High School freshman Shaunta Taylor claimed, “like if we see a car crash we are going to look, so if we see some people try to tear each other apart, we’re gonna look.”
Amongst our generation and school, people love violence and conflict, from just fighting videos online to other extreme forms fo violence.
It is beyond obvious that people enjoy the thrill of a fight, even nudging the people who are in a tense situation to begin one in the first place.
Yet, there is a way for these to end before they even start with some sort of conflict resolution or mediator solution.
“There’s always talking, there are different forms of communication, these usually stem from problems of communication,” CHS Teacher Mr. McCracken said. “There are different avenues of communication, written, or like a mediatory to make sure things don’t get out of hand.”
According to Mr. Bravo, the Dean of CHS, there have only been four fights this school year, with a total of 17 fights last year. CHS Assistant Principal Mr. Riddle has said that it went from a fight every couple weeks 2 years ago, to now being merely a fight every few months.
Nonetheless, it is still bad that one even starts at all, with nearly all of them starting from very petty, unnecessary conflict that can be dealt with by talking or a similar sort out in most cases. Students should avoid coming to the conclusion that there is nothing you can really do in this type of situation.
“I don’t think nothing can be done for real, because honestly, a fight is a fight,”Academy of Medical Arts senior Robin Raphiel stated, “and if they are both poppin 'mess, then it's gonna be hype, then nothing in reality, other than they both can’t fight then there's that.”
All in all, there is really no way to stop this predicament, since it’s like a car crash, we always have to look unless everyone buys into the reality of conflict resolution and programs offered by Mrs. Newton who is an expert on restorative justice practices.
“Personally, just because it's entertaining, I mean like you gotta think about something,” Academies of Education and Empowerment senior Jabari Laseer confessed. “Nothing much happens at school, so when you have a fight happening at school, it is interesting.”
But should our school day really be like a reality TV show or a scripted wrestling match? Just because students might find this entertaining does not mean that it is encouraged! Maybe find a hobby or other means to entertain yourself?
“Don’t encourage it either, like we are at this point hopefully all more than 10 years old,” Mr. McCracken explained, “so let’s act like that and try to find a better solution than trying to beat [...] someone.”
“I don’t think students think about the well-being of others. I think to most it is entertaining,” said CHS senior Mia Sanchez. “I mean, I've been a part of it when I was a lot younger- you know you go running to see ‘cause it's entertaining.”
The students on this campus need to know that it is always okay to go talk to a teacher or staff member-there are Black Student Achievement Plan (BSAP) counselors, small learning community counselors, and psychologists that are here to help. Taking action by talking to someone is definitely not snitching whatsoever. What is an imaginary street code of conduct, to bruises, wounds, and broken bones?
“Well you know, kids need to recognize that the person that they’re angry with is someone else's child so obviously [go] to ask an adult to help or for mediation,” said long time AEE instructor Mr. Lal.
Poll Results:
200 students of AMA, AEE, CHS, and teachers and staff.
Maybe we need to do some introspection and realize that social media isn’t real. According to a poll of 200 students, the role that social media plays in fighting is a big one.
Ultimately, students need to also learn to not let their ego get in the way of their judgment nor let things get out of control over small, miniscule issues that they are facing here.
There are hundreds of schools that face the issue of student’s glorifying fighting.
Luckily for now, fights rarely happen here, and people are starting to get a bit smarter. We could only hope it all stops soon, with the glorification of fighting being saved for the movie screen only..
