Solar Eclipse Shines Over Sunny California

Updated: Oct 17, 2020

Solar Eclipses are rare and can be one of the most magnificent lifetime experiences. There are between 2 to 5 solar eclipses every year, each one visible only in a limited area. The last time the United States saw the solar eclipse was on February 26, 1979. The recent sighting of the solar eclipse happened on August 21, 2017 and it amazed many people across the United States. Many citizens decided to take the experience up a notch and went out of state to get the best possible view. Unfortunately for many Carson High students, we weren’t allowed to see the solar eclipse due to not having the proper eyewear.

Senior Micah Aguon from CHS stated, “I thought the solar eclipse was pretty extravagant. My reaction was that I thought it was cool to be able to see it through the glasses and it made me go [woah].” Micah explained, “The students who weren’t able to see it didn’t really miss that much because it wasn’t a total eclipse, but it was still cool to see and they could wait for another 7 years to see the next one.”

Senior Janelle Catbagan from AMA stated, “I think it’s really cool and that it’s a once in a lifetime thing. It’s rare and it’s one of those moments that you really shouldn’t miss.” Janelle added, “ I think we should have been able to see it and I’m sad I didn’t get the opportunity to see it.”

Freshman Janelle Gomez from CHS stated, “It was really cool because I never got to see one before. It was a black circle and the sun looked like a crescent.” Janelle describes, “It was really yellow and orange, the moon was so dark and black, it looked even  brighter. I was so honored being able to witness it.”

Not being able to see the eclipse is unfortunate because it’s one of those rare times in history when you can only see it once in a lifetime. Although the school complex couldn’t see it due to safety concerns, the school made a good call. The next total eclipse for North America will come on April 8, 2024.
