The student-led conference document is an assignment that we get in our advisory class. We have to follow a script which talks about our performance in our classes.
The school then sets up a date where families are welcome to sit with their children to go over their scripts. This year they had the conferences on October 18, 2023, from 5 to 7 PM.
Carson High School teachers found it was a necessary assignment for the students, but some of the students were not happy about it.
¨Yes, my teacher made it mandatory, and he liked pushed it on us and like was really rude to us about it,” said Carson High School junior Taylor Miramontes.
Some argue that the conferences are unnecessary because of report cards that indicate whether a student is passing a class or not.
Many teachers, however, think otherwise as a necessary tool.
“I think it should be everybody. I think it is important for parents to know how well, or maybe not so well, their kids are doing,”said CHS math teacher Mr.Torres, “but in any way, whether it's good or bad, I think it makes sure [that] the kids are communicating with mom and dad.¨
There is a clear difference in what the students and teachers think about the student-led conferences.
“It doesn't really help me out, it's just consistent stuff,¨ said CHS senior Emmory Light.
Despite there being a mixed debate, many of the students attended this year's student-led Conference with their parents in order to talk about progress in classes.
