The Importance of Taking the SAT

The Scholastic Aptitude Test is a standardized test widely used for college admissions in the United States. The SAT attempts to measure college readiness and predict future academic success. The SAT serves as a great compliment to a student’s grade point average, as it provides exact indications of what concepts the student is strong at, and which ones they need to work on more. Scores are submitted to universities and colleges offering undergraduate programs in the U.S. as one part of an entire college application. Normally, in order to take the test, a student will pay a fee of $52.50, register from their school’s college center, and then schedule to take it at a different location. This past March, Carson High School had waived the fee and allowed all of its 11th grade students to take the SAT for free.

Environmental Science Engineering and Technology junior Marshawn Bryant said, “Finding out that we would be taking the SAT at school was a surprise. I got a score of 980. I plan on taking the test again but taking it at school was a good learning experience and now I know exactly what to expect the next time.”

The SAT potentially boosts your chances at getting into colleges, so the test itself should be taken very seriously. If you don’t have the BEST grades, scoring high on it can potentially compensate for it.

Performance Art and Media Academy junior Matthew Sigua stated, “There’s honestly a lot of things you can do to make sure you get a high score. I recommend joining study groups, taking practice SAT tests through Khan Acedemy, and asking your peers for help.”

This year marks the first year that the SAT is free for juniors at CHS.

Many students haven’t taken it yet like Academies of Education and Empowerment senior Angelina Langford who explained her concerns, “I am very worried because this one test could mean the difference between me and someone else’s application being accepted into my dream university. I am very nervous for the time limit, all the math, reading, and writing must all be done in a specific deadline. I usually take a lot of time to make sure my essays are perfect.”

Students go through many obstacles and challenges within the 4 years they spend in high school. Good grades do reflect many things, work habits, willingness, dedication etc. But the SAT is shows colleges the KNOWLEDGE you actually collected throughout high school. Do your absolute best!
