On the evening of Sunday, October 1st, a mass shooting took place at the Route 91 Harvest Music Festival on the Las Vegas Strip in Paradise, Nevada. The first call reporting the incident occurred at 10:08pm with shots firing on and off for 9-11 minutes. With nearly 22,000 people present, 58 of those were reportedly dead and more than 500 left injured. This tragic incident has now been claimed to be the deadliest mass shooting in modern US history.
Many families have lost their loved ones due to this unfortunate disturbance, which leaves us to question the probability of this happening to those that we care for as well.
Jacqueline Toscano, a 12th grader at Carson High School, shares that her brother and his fiance were attendees of the music festival and she had called her family to notify them of the situation. Although they are alive and well, the position that they were forced to be in is extremely unfortunate.
“My mom is constantly reminding me that there are crazy people in the world which is why she keeps me from doing certain things for my own protection,” stated Jacqueline.
Senior, Vivianna Ambriz, from Carson High School claims that she was in a nearby gift shop when the incident had taken place and was completely terrified for her life. Fortunately, her and her loved ones are safe and unharmed. However, this tragic event had left an impact on her that is unforgettable.
With the idea that “guns don’t kill people, people do,” you’d think that another incident regarding guns will push for stricter gun control.
“If someone wants to hurt people, they will find a way to do it… either way, there should be certain measures taken to try to prevent it,” stated Vivianna.
Although devastating incidents occur constantly and cause us to lose hope in humanity, it is up to us to rebuild society. It is up to us to restore hope for our future.
