The first superhero movie with a predominantly black cast is here. Black Panther came crashing down breaking records, with only a 4 day debut, 404 million in ticket sales. Black Panther is a fictional storyline by Marvel, an action movie that people from all over the world have been waiting for.
Black Panther is the first superhero of African descent in an American mainstream comic. There were many teasers prior to the movie’s release such as the amazing soundtrack by Kendrick Lamar.
Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman) returns home to the isolated, technologically advanced African nation of Wakanda to take his place as King. An old enemy reappears and Black Panther is tested when he is drawn into a battle for the throne by his own cousin (Michael B. Jordan) which puts the entire fate of Wakanda and the world at risk.
Many students were excited to watch the movie for multiple reasons including curiosity, historical relevance, and the phenomenal cast.
“I think I’m more excited for it [Black Panther] because some of my favorite actresses like Michael B. Jordan and Angela Bassett are in it,” Academy of Medical Arts senior Angel Monjet.
“Black Panther is going to be a big deal in the black community because this will be one of the first real black superheros,” stated Academies of Education and Epowerment sophomore Christian Hill.
AMC theatres in southern California were forced to add in a total of 84 additional show times to accommodate the large crowds. Many fans wore traditional African and even Black Panther merchandise.
Black Panther didn’t let down their fans either. With the movie hitting on racial injustice in the black community and providing a conservative political message, you can say the fans were very pleased.
“Black Panther was absolutely amazing! It’s a movie that has finally given black kids [and] families something to look up to. It was funny and influential, especially to black people,” said CHS junior Khaliyah Brown.
