Those who enjoy celebrating Women’s History Month in March may vary from person to person, but overall, it’s a celebration of women and all of their accomplishments over the years. The celebration originated in 1980, being instituted by former President John Carter according to womenshistory.gov.
Women's History Month plays a huge part in the remembrance of all the women that have changed our lives as we know it. Women throughout the years have fought and sacrificed so that the world can be a better place. This time is also for everyone to reflect on issues related to equality and to be reminded that women are equal to men.
There were many brave women in the past that defied the odds and achieved major accomplishments despite the fact that their race and gender may have caused roadblocks. Overall, women have overcome a lot throughout the years and deserve at least a month that recognizes their accomplishments.
Carson High School M.E.Di.A Magnet Coordinator Mrs. Harris has been inspired by many notable women, especially Evelyn Boyd Granville. Boyd’s impressive work in aerospace deserves recognition especially because of the barriers she had to surpass as a Black woman in 1924.
MM freshman Amber Rodriguez has also been inspired by women, with one of her most notable inspirations being Gina Rodriguez.
“She's an actress, and I genuinely just always loved the way that she was able to win awards and do stuff that other women weren't able to do, especially as a Latina,” said Amber.
Amber had also shared that she and her family like to take a trip down memory lane in remembrance of important women.
“Every year my family and I look through back when my grandmother was growing up and see the different things she's done and how much she's grown up and what she was able to accomplish,” said Amber.
To commemorate, Mrs. Harris plans to host a Women's History Month fashion show during the month of April.
Women’s History Month allows us all to remember the revolutionary women that have changed the course of history and those of today who are trailblazers.
